ISLAMABAD:Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), has urged Pakistan to adopt a comprehensive strategy to address the escalating tensions with Afghanistan, warning that war would be detrimental to both nations.
In a recent interview with a private television channel, Rehman emphasized the need for dialogue and strategic planning over military confrontation.
Rehman criticized Pakistan’s past policies on terrorism, stating that the state’s mistakes have exacerbated the situation.
He highlighted that while Iran accommodated Afghan refugees without turning the region into a war zone, Pakistan became a base camp for conflict after the Afghan war. This, he argued, has led to long-term consequences for the country.
The JUI-F chief also addressed the controversial use of the term “jihad,” noting that the state failed to clarify its stance when supporting the U.S. after 9/11, which created confusion among the people.
He referenced a fatwa issued by Afghan scholars declaring that any ongoing conflict in Afghanistan should no longer be considered jihad but rather war.

Rehman revealed that 35,000 scholars from Pakistan had passed a resolution supporting the country’s constitution, emphasizing unity among religious and political factions.
He also mentioned efforts to foster dialogue with Afghanistan, including a week-long visit where he discussed critical issues with Afghan leaders.
However, he expressed disappointment over the lack of follow-through on agreements reached during these discussions.
On the domestic front, Rehman criticized the current government, stating that he does not recognize the mandate of the ruling PML-N. He called for senior political figures to play a more constructive role in resolving the country’s crises.
He also noted that the relationship between JUI-F and Imran Khan’s PTI is improving, with both parties moving toward moderation and mutual understanding.
Rehman concluded by urging the government to rethink its approach to Afghanistan and focus on a comprehensive strategy that avoids war.
He announced that JUI-F will hold a general council meeting after Eid to decide on future policies.
