Federal Minister for Water Resources, Mian Muhammad Moin Wattoo, inaugurated the second phase of the Mohmand Dam project. He was accompanied by Chairman WAPDA, Engineer Lieutenant General (R) Sajjad Ghani, who reviewed the ongoing construction activities.
The project administration informed the Federal Minister that work is currently underway at 14 different sites, including the Diovation System, the Tax Tunnel, the Supplyways, and the Power House. Significant milestones, such as the River Diversion and the Foundation, have already been completed before the construction of the main dam begins.
Speaking to the media, Moin Wattoo emphasised that while a significant amount of work remains, the current pace of progress is encouraging. He expressed his desire for the dam to be completed before 2027. Despite concerns about potential delays, he is hopeful that the target will be met. Additionally, he mentioned that several water storage projects are in the planning stages.
The Mohmand Dam, which stands at 213 meters high, is the fifth largest CFRD (Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam) in the world, with a capacity to store 1.29 million acre-feet of water. Once completed, the dam will irrigate over 18,000 acres of new land and supply 300 million gallons of drinking water daily to the city of Peshawar. The project is also expected to generate 2.86 billion units of environmentally friendly electricity annually, with completion anticipated between 2027 and 2028.
