ISLAMABAD: The federal government has introduced a bill in the National Assembly to amend the Petroleum Act 1934, imposing strict penalties to curb smuggling and illegal trade of petroleum products. Under the proposed law, petrol pumps found with smuggled fuel will face confiscation or a fine of Rs 10 million.
The amendment mandates deputy and assistant commissioners to transfer ownership of confiscated petrol pumps to customs authorities. It also introduces digital tracking for petroleum storage and deliveries to ensure transparency.

First-time offenders involved in smuggling, illegal storage, or unauthorized trade will be fined Rs 1 million, while repeat offenders will face Rs 5 million penalties. Unlicensed petrol pumps risk complete confiscation of property by district authorities. Additionally, petrol station owners will have a six-month grace period to renew expired licenses.
