The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Irrigation Department has proposed to the government to install a modern telemetry system to monitor flash floods and river flow in the province.
The note sent to the Chief Secretary has requested funds of Rs 90 million to install this system at 7 different locations.
The note states that the difficult terrain of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is often prone to sudden and severe floods due to the effects of climate change, and losses have been incurred due to a lack of immediate response on such occasions.
The concerned department, while reviewing the situation, has recommended installing telemetry at places like Kalam Steel Bridge, Bahrain Bazaar, Bagh Dheri Bridge, Badri Nallah, Swabi, Maqam Nallah, Mardan, Tuchi Darya, Gambila Bridge, Kurram Darya, Kohat Road, Bannu. These systems will enable timely monitoring and warning systems of water coming from the upper reaches of the river, so that it is possible to prevent loss of life and property.
The Irrigation Department has requested the Finance Department to release funds of Rs 90 million so that the system can be installed immediately.

Heavy and continuous monsoon rains have lashed various parts of South Waziristan, triggering severe flash floods, soil erosion of agricultural land and transportation routes.
The flooding has disrupted daily life and caused substantial economic losses to local communities, particularly farmers. Locals report that in several parts of the region, the forceful currents of floodwaters have resulted in significant soil erosion and land degradation.
This erosion has damaged fertile agricultural fields, destroying standing crops and undermining the livelihoods of many farmers who depend heavily on their harvests. Additionally, several roads and access routes have been washed away or severely damaged, further isolating affected villages and complicating relief efforts.
