PESHAWAR: A complete ban has been imposed on the officers and personnel of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Police on unauthorized use of social media and presenting suspects under investigation to YouTubers.
A statement issued by the Inspector General of Police’s office has clarified that unnecessary activities on social media by police personnel are affecting the reputation of the police department, for which immediate disciplinary action will be taken.
According to the statement, the misuse of Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, and other social media platforms is not only affecting the performance of the department but can also pose a threat to the lives of the personnel. Several personnel have been allowed to illegally record the statements of the accused, over which the judiciary has expressed strong anger.
On the instructions of the Inspector General of Police, all district police officers and unit heads have been directed to establish social media monitoring units in their offices so that the activities of the personnel can be monitored. These units have been directed to identify those violating the social media policy and take immediate action against them.
The statement said that the irresponsible use of social media by police personnel continues despite repeated warnings, due to which a report has now been sought from all DPOs and unit commanders within a week on how much they have implemented this ban and what actions have been taken on violations.
Additional Inspector General of Police, Internal Accountability Branch, Muhammad Alam Shinwari, has warned all units that if they do not fully implement the social media policy, action will be taken against them. Police officials have made it clear that no negligence will be tolerated now.
