Prices of daily essentials surges as profiteers’ excuse fuel price burden

Food and Electricity Prices Drive Pakistan’s Inflation to 59-Year Low

KOHAT : Following the recent increase in petroleum product prices, residents of Kohat are facing a fresh wave of inflation, as opportunistic profiteers have significantly raised the prices of essential food items and household goods. The arbitrary price hikes have added to the woes of already struggling families, making it increasingly difficult for them to manage basic monthly expenses.

Local markets in Kohat are witnessing a noticeable surge in the cost of flour, ghee, vegetables, fruits, dairy products, and other staples. Many vendors have taken advantage of the fuel price hike to raise prices disproportionately, even on items that are not directly affected by transportation costs.

According to residents, the sudden and unregulated increase in commodity prices has hit low- and middle-income households the hardest. People earning modest salaries or relying on daily wages say their income is no longer enough to meet even the most basic needs of their families. “We are forced to cut back on meals, skip medicines, and delay school expenses. Life is becoming unbearable,” said one resident.

Citizens blame both profiteers and government negligence for the situation. They say the administration has failed to monitor markets effectively or take action against traders who exploit economic conditions to charge excessive rates. “Every time fuel prices go up, the same cycle begins. But where are the price control committees? Who is accountable?” questioned another concerned shopper at the main city bazaar.

Despite multiple appeals from the public, there has been little visible action from the local authorities to address the issue. While official price lists exist, enforcement remains weak, and there is minimal oversight in ensuring compliance by shopkeepers.

Residents of Kohat are now urging the government to take urgent steps to control inflation and hold profiteers accountable. They are demanding strict implementation of price regulations, regular market inspections, and penalties for those who artificially inflate costs. As the burden of inflation grows heavier, the people of Kohat say they are left with no choice but to raise their voices in protest. Their message to the government is clear: act now, or the gap between survival and poverty will continue to widen for countless families.
