PUTA demands 10 billion Endowment Fund for crisis-hit Peshawar University

PESHAWAR:  To overcome the financial crisis of the university, Peshawar University Teacher Association (PUTA) has sent letters to the President of Pakistan, the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to establish an endowment fund of Rs 10 billion. In the letter, it has been demanded to establish an endowment fund of Rs 10 billion for the university to end the financial crisis of the university. The letter said that University of Peshawar, which is considered one of the best universities in Pakistan, is currently facing a severe financial crisis.

The salaries of the university staff have not been paid since June 2025, due to which the employees are currently facing severe distress. In the letter, it has been demanded from President Asif Ali Zardari to establish an endowment fund of Rs 10 billion for the University of Peshawar pay the wages teachers and other staff. PUTA said that the current pension liabilities of the university have exceeded Rs 1.6 billion. The establishment of an endowment fund of Rs 10 billion will ensure the long-term sustainability of the university to overcome the crisis.

They also appealed to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mian Shahbaz Sharif, for immediate assistance and release of special funds for this historical institute. In addition, the letter written to Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur has also mentioned the financial crisis of the university and explained the benefits of establishing endowment funds. It has also been demanded from him that an endowment fund of Rs. 10 billion is necessary to permanently get the university out of the crisis. The establishment of the fund will solve the problem of salaries and pension liabilities of employees.
