KARACHI: A stray dog rescued by a Pakistani farmer helped police find its owner’s buried body. This led to the arrest of the victim’s wife and her brother for murder, officials said Tuesday.
Omar Hayat was killed last month in a village in Tehsil Chichawatni, Punjab. Police arrested his wife, Shamim, and her brother, Fida Hussain. A local court sent them to jail in judicial custody on Monday, Station House Officer (SHO) Shahzad Ahmed told Arab News.
Months earlier, Hayat had found the injured dog by the roadside. Both its legs were broken. He took it in and nursed it back to health. Within two months, the dog could walk again. It stayed by Hayat’s side ever since.
When Hayat disappeared, the dog started searching. It sniffed his scent and began digging through burnt cow dung. It kept digging for two days until human legs appeared. A local resident, Bilal Shah, saw the remains and informed police.
“We called the crime scene unit and collected evidence,” Ahmed said. The victim’s face was completely burned, making identification difficult. His wife refused to recognize the body and misled the police. However, Hayat’s mother identified the legs as his. DNA tests later confirmed the body’s identity.
Police arrested Shamim’s brother, Mudasir, last week. They arrested Shamim two days ago. A court sent both to jail on judicial remand.
During interrogation, the suspects confessed. They admitted to killing Hayat and burying his body under cow dung before setting it on fire.
“Shamim said her husband used drugs and had affairs,” Ahmed said. “She caught him with another woman and went to her brother. Together, they murdered him.”
Hayat was from Multan and worked at a farmhouse in Chichawatni. He lived there with Shamim and their four children. Shamim, originally from Khanewal, had been married to him for 15 years.
