Russia-Ukraine talks yield prisoner swap but ceasefire stalemate

The latest peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul ended without significant progress on ending the war, though both sides agreed to exchange prisoners of war.

During Monday’s negotiations—held hours after Ukrainian drone strikes hit Russia—delegates discussed peace terms for an hour. They finalized a prisoner swap involving seriously injured and young captives but clashed sharply over ceasefires.

Ukraine pushed for a full 30-day ceasefire across land, sea, and air, while Russia countered with a limited 2–3 day pause in select areas. Moscow again rejected Kyiv’s demand for an unconditional truce backed by Western allies.

Ukraine also submitted a list of children allegedly transferred to Russia and proposed a future leaders’ summit. Despite low expectations, the meeting marked the first major dialogue since May’s prisoner exchange.
