Two die, several injured in rain related incidents in KP

At least two people were killed and several others were injured in rain-related incidents across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday.

Severe storms, strong winds, heavy rain, and hail have caused widespread damage in several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Initial reports indicate that two people have died and five others have been injured in various incidents.

The affected districts include Peshawar, Swat, Mansehra, Shangla, Bara, Landi Kotal, Balakot, and the Kaghan Valley, all of which have experienced intense rain and hailstorms. In Shangla district, one person died due to lightning, while a child lost their life when a roof collapsed in Nowshera district.

In Peshawar, the provincial capital, many roads have flooded, resembling rivers due to the heavy rainfall. Three individuals sustained injuries when the roof of a hotel (dhaba) in the Matni area collapsed under strong winds. Additionally, a mother and her son were injured when a roof collapsed in the Swabi district.

Rain accompanied by strong winds was noted in Mingora, Malam Jabba, and Kalam in Swat, while heavy hail was reported in Alpuri and the surrounding areas of Shangla. All three tehsils of Haripur were also affected by strong winds, which uprooted trees and electricity poles.

In Abbottabad, torrential rain has led to traffic jams on Mansehra Road due to flooding in rivers and canals. Meanwhile, in the Lower Kohistan region of Kohistan, the Karakoram Highway has been closed at various points because of flooding and landslides. This road is closed to all types of traffic due to severe mudslides at Khidr Nallah, Nallah Jijal Bazar, and Asbar Nallah.

The DPO of Kohistan has instructed all police stations and outposts to stay alert, and the process of relocating tourists and travellers to safe areas is currently underway. The Meteorological Department has forecasted more rain in various parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa within the next 24 hours.

A young man was injured as a windstorm swept through parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and the federal capital on Tuesday. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had predicted that wind and hailstorms, along with heavy rains, would hit these areas from May 27 to May 31.

The severe weather caused significant damage in various locations throughout Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Notably, the solar plant at a private girls’ school in the Barkambarkhel area of Bara has completely failed, which could severely impact the students’ education.

Additionally, a house in Bara Shalubar was destroyed when its roof collapsed, damaging all the belongings inside. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, but the affected family is facing considerable hardships.
