United Nations UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on India and Pakistan to “exercise maximum restraint” following a deadly attack in Indian-Occupied Kashmir that killed 26 people near Pahalgam on Tuesday. Guterres’ spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, expressed “great concern” over India’s retaliatory measures, including suspending the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, closing borders, expelling Pakistani diplomats, and ordering some Pakistani visa holders to leave.
Pakistan denied involvement in the attack, retaliating by suspending Indian visas, expelling diplomats, and closing its airspace to Indian flights. The UN chief condemned the attack and urged peaceful dialogue, though no direct contact with either country’s leadership has occurred. Dujarric stressed disputes “should be resolved through meaningful engagement,” criticizing India’s treaty suspension as escalating tensions.
