WASHINGTON: The United States has announced new import tariffs on goods from multiple countries, including a 19% duty on Pakistan, 35% on Canada, and 20% on Vietnam, as part of President Donald Trump’s “America First” trade policy.
A White House spokesperson confirmed Trump signed an executive order approving the move, which also imposes 15% tariffs on Israel and Venezuela , 39% on Switzerland, 35% on Iraq , 15% on Japan ,40% on Laos and Myanmar
The administration claims the tariffs aim to protect US industries, but analysts warn they could heighten global trade tensions. Meanwhile, Pakistan is set to import 1 million barrels of US crude oil in October, signaling continued economic ties despite the new duties.
Most affected nations, including Pakistan, have not yet responded officially. The move follows Trump’s longstanding push to prioritize American manufacturing, though critics argue it risks sparking retaliatory measures.
