Women passengers face hardships due to overcrowding and Insufficient BRT buses

PESHAWAR: Women commuters complained about overcrowding and insufficient buses of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), saying they have been facing hardships due to the shortage of buses and rush in Peshawar’s BRT.

According to source, 30 percent of seats in the BRT are reserved for women, which is proving to be insufficient compared to the increasing number of passengers in the city.

A passenger traveling in a BRT bus, while speaking to Pakhtun Digital, said that they have to travel standing up like men, which makes traveling in the BRT difficult for them. Due to the rush, elderly women are also deprived of seats, while incidents of theft are also seen increasing.

According to Trans Peshawar spokesperson Sadaf Kamil, a demand for 50 new buses has been placed for the BRT, but their inclusion will take time. She said that the help of cameras is being taken to prevent theft, but it is becoming difficult to catch thieves due to the rush.

Millions of people travel in the BRT every day, but due to the limited number of buses, travel facilities for women are becoming inadequate.
