PESHAWAR: Pakistan solemnly observed the 26th martyrdom anniversary of Captain Karnal Sher Khan, Nishan-e-Haider, one of the most revered heroes of the Kargil War.
Ceremonies held across the country, especially in his hometown of Swabi, were marked by floral tributes, prayers, and deep respect for his unmatched courage and sacrifice. In Swabi, military officers and local dignitaries gathered at Captain Sher Khan’s mausoleum to lay wreaths and offer fateha.
The Pakistan Army’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) issued a heartfelt statement, calling him a symbol of unwavering bravery and an inspiration for generations to come. The armed forces reiterated that his name would forever be etched in history as a defender of the nation’s sovereignty.
Born on January 1, 1970, Captain Karnal Sher Khan rose to prominence during the 1999 Kargil conflict between Pakistan and India. Stationed at one of the highest and most dangerous posts in the Gultari sector, he led his troops under treacherous conditions, launching counterattacks to recapture lost ground and protect vital positions.
His leadership, according to both Pakistani and Indian accounts, displayed extraordinary fearlessness and strategic insight. During one such counteroffensive on July 5, 1999, he embraced martyrdom after a fierce battle, refusing to retreat despite being heavily outnumbered.
His valor was so compelling that even Indian military officers acknowledged his gallantry, reportedly informing Pakistani authorities of the identity of the fallen officer whose bravery had left a strong impression. In recognition of his selfless devotion to duty and unparalleled heroism, the Government of Pakistan posthumously awarded him the Nishan-e-Haider—the highest military honor in the country.
